Welcome to the web presence of Cartographer, a literary review. Cartographer is dedicated to publishing the best in contemporary literature.
Many poems and stories are birthed in a single moment, in a certain impression. Legend has it, Dostoevsky envisioned the whole of Crime and Punishment after reading a short newspaper article about a murder. One impression can unfold volumes in the right hands, as the writer finds words for the expression.
Why create another literary journal? Because we, the editors, have received a certain impression from the world and we notice that many others share some of the beauty of that impression. A literary journal is a sort of work of art in and of itself, as a whole, where each poem and story contributes to an overall impression which the editors are chasing.
There are many literary journals. Many of them are great. But they’re certain collections put together by certain people. This journal is a certain collection of works put together by Nathan Hunt and Dustin Junkert. It doesn’t exist because there aren’t any other good journals, it exists because we want to be a part of the work of fellow poets and story writers and work together to exhibit a certain impression, a certain image of the world.
“Cartographer” was chosen to express the idea of surveying, of mapping the landscape of contemporary literature. Don’t stop exploring.
